As with any industry, social media has its own set of rules relating to best practice. Not only that, but each channel has its own list of do’s and don’ts that really shouldn’t be ignored.
Here are some key tips for social media best practice for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. What To Do Post Consistently Create a posting schedule and try to stick to it. Leave room for some time-sensitive or trending topic posts but get your audience used to the regular rhythm of your posting. This makes them familiar with your brand and leads to increased brand awareness and eventually, recognition too. Complete As Much Information On Your Page As Possible If there’s a field that applies to your business, fill it in! Add your website URL, opening hours, phone number, email address, and anything else you can. The more people know about your business from their first visit, the easier it is for them to connect with you. Set An Easy To Recognise Profile Picture And Cover Image Make sure you use a profile picture that clearly identifies you or your brand. Carry your branding through your cover image or video as well. People need to be able to instantly recognise your posts in their newsfeed as belonging to you and a clear profile picture will help. Use Video, Live Video and Images Facebook loves video content at the moment, especially live videos. Live videos not only reach people while you are live, but also for a time after the video has ended. Gone are the days when using video was optional – it’s something you should be planning into your content regularly. If you really can’t face doing regular videos, make sure you are using unique images in your posts. These often outperform text and link posts and ones with stock images. What Not To Do Post Erratically Don’t post 3 times in one day and then nothing for 3 weeks. Be consistent when you post and use a scheduling tool to help you save time and stress about what to post. Use Different Tones Of Voice, Branding And Colours Keep your branding, colours and tone of your posts consistent. This builds trust with your audience. Take Too Long To Respond To Messages It’s hard to switch off from work when people are able to message us all hours of the day and night. Set business hours on your page if you want people to know when to expect a reply. But don’t take days to reply – reply as soon as you can within your set hours. What To Do Post Consistently Just like Facebook, consistency is key. This is especially so since Instagram ditched chronological news feeds. You need to post regularly in order to be seen in your followers newsfeeds. Use All 30 Hashtags Instagram lets you use a maximum of 30 hashtags in order to be found – use them all! It’s such a waste if you only use 5 hashtags and there is no reason not to use all 30. Use Your Bio To Its Full Advantage You should be using a business account in Instagram so make sure you take full advantage of every character allowed in your bio. Don’t waffle, keep it short and snappy but include all information possible to make your bio stand out. What Not To Do Use Hashtags With Millions Of Posts Use hashtags wisely. If you’re a small local florist in Melbourne, there’s no point using #love – it has over 1 billion posts! Find hashtags that are right for your business and that people will actually use to find your content. Ignore Your Audience When your audience comments on your posts, make sure to reply to them. Instagram loves engagement and will serve your content to more people if it sees comments and likes on your post. Buy Followers Just don’t. Fake followers are only going to hurt your brand, reputation and account in the long run so while a bump in numbers might look good, when people dig deeper it’s clear to see they’ve been bought. What To Do Post About Live And Trending Topics Twitter is all about what’s happening right now. Use it to share news and views on trending topics. Engage With Other Users Twitter is all about conversations. Start them, get involved with them and share them. It can also help your brand get noticed by the people you want to find you. Check Before You Tweet It’s super frustrating but Twitter has no edit button. Once you’ve sent that tweet, there’s no editing allowed so make sure there are no typos before you post! What Not To Do Overtweet Unless it’s an epic story that won’t fit into one tweet, don’t overtweet. No one needs to hear from you 50 times a day on Twitter! Don’t Use Too Many Hashtags Be selective with your hashtags on Twitter. It can make your tweets hard to read if #every second #word is #hashtagged. Use hashtags that will get you eyeballs, and not annoy your followers. Retweet Without Tweaking/Commenting Retweeting is great, but try to put your own spin on it. Add a comment and give your take on the topic. What To Do Connect With People You Know, Or Want To Know Don’t be that person that adds everyone under the sun for no reason other than to collect connections. Choose your connections carefully, based on people you’ve worked with or would like to work with. Personalise your URL Some people are still unaware they can personalise their profile URL. Make sure to personalise your URL to your name or brand (or both) instead of it being a random string of letters and numbers. Use An Appropriate Photo LinkedIn is one platform where you NEED to have an up to date profile photo. Check it at least once a year and give it a refresh when needed. What Not To Do Add Everyone Under The Sun You don’t need to connect with everyone who commented on your ex-colleague’s post. Don’t be trigger happy and click that connect button on everyone and anyone. Send A Generic Connection Request When you do choose to connect with people, the best thing you can do is add a personalised note to the request. You’re so much more likely to have them accept and even reply to your connection request when you include a personal message sharing why you’ve asked to connect and who you are. Forget Its Original Purpose LinkedIn might be one of the fastest growing social media platforms but don’t forget why it was created in the first place. It’s a place to connect with colleagues, business partners and clients – not your mates. Keep it professional at all times.
